Mechatronics in the interdisciplinary study of engineering science based on a coherent fusion of mechanical and electrical engineering and computer science. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, mechatronics is fundamental to all forms of modern product design. Very few products in todays world consist exclusively of mechanisms, electrical circuitry or pure information. In almost all cases, a combination of these three areas of expertise are required for the design and manufacture of a usable product. This places demand on the expertise of engineers and scientists which only multi-faceted philosophy, like mechatronics, can satisfy.

Well known examples of mechatronic products are active safety systems in automobiles such as antilock braking systems (ABS) and similar automotive control systems, robotics and intelligents industrial automation systems. Typical application areas for mechatronics are:

  • Robotics and Automation
  • Automobile technology
  • Sensors and Actuators
  • Applied computer science and information technology
  • Micromechanics and Microsystems technology
  • Materials science
  • Bio and medical technolgy etc.
